By contrast to short-term fixes adopted often in times of transition, KFUPM’s approach focuses on sustained inquiry in science and technology that responds to the real needs of today’s fast-changing global environments. The new societal and industrial priorities that have emerged are calling for multidisciplinary research methods and long-term partnerships.
To meet these demands, KFUPM has set an ambitious objective: to contribute to the Saudi and global economies by creating and supporting new sectors, rather than simply following conventional ones. We aim to be a “technology-leaping” university, anticipating future challenges and developing practical solutions even before industries demand them. This strategic direction makes a strong case for disrupting established value chains and opening new opportunities for societal and economic growth.
Sustainability is a central part of our research strategy. KFUPM has already made progress in areas such as sustainable materials, clean energy, and related fields. For example, we have invested in facilities and collaborations that support clean energy research, including a hydrogen research center, a hydrogen consortium, a clean combustion laboratory, and an expanding body of work, with more than 300 publications on hydrogen since our transformation began.
We align all our projects with global and national sustainability goals while ensuring they address technical, economic, and social aspects. In practice, this means our research topic selections are focused on balancing immediate applications with long-term impacts on both people and the environment.
However, tackling challenges of this scale can only succeed with dedicated partners across the public and private sectors. That is why we place strong emphasis on collaboration, interdisciplinary research, and joint efforts at every stage of our strategy.
We seek out partners who share our vision and priorities so that, together, we can develop practical solutions with meaningful benefits for society. The case studies below illustrate how this commitment has translated into real-world outcomes.
